Independence, a Palm Beach Motor Yachts 65, is currently listed with Grand Banks Marine Group for $4.45 million. The 2021 flybridge motor yacht is sure to impress with its three-stateroom layout, numerous entertainment spaces and 40-knot speed.

When Yachting first reported on the Palm Beach 65, we noted the quality of the build down to the smallest detail, “A lot of builders get the obvious markers correct — or “correct” enough to pass the normal examination — but the true clues to a company’s obsession with quality hide from the view of all but the most careful shopper. As I stepped through the doorway to the salon, admiring the finish on the bifold door and the surround, the hinges caught my eye. After I retrieved it (my eye), I saw that the crisscross on the head of each Phillips screw perfectly lined up with every other one on every hinge. Same for the hinges on the middle joint of the door, and I found details of this sort everywhere. To wit: The reveals of each door and drawer were very narrow, and when I looked at the bank of them in the galley, I discovered that all of the reveals were visually the same width. The drawers slid fluidly in and out, and the doors opened and closed without the slightest protest. I looked for flaws within the depths of every stowage locker and cabinet, but didn’t find any…”

Independence’s flag-blue hull is vacuum-infused E-Glass with carbon fiber reinforcement in structural areas for enhanced strength without extra weight. It’s cored with Corcell and Airex foam, stitched multiaxial fabric, and vinylester and epoxy resins. The deck and superstructure are fully-infused carbon fiber.

The Palm Beach 65’s salon has a feeling of warmth and volume thanks to the natural light via 360 degrees of glass, light neutral tones and high-gloss-wood finishes. There is an L-shaped sofa and fixed table to port and two facing loveseats to starboard with a coffee table between them, a natural area for pre-dinner cocktails and casual conversation. The lower helm station is forward of the loveseats and has additional bench seating to port for companions.

The galley is forward of the salon, to port and down a few steps. A J-shaped countertop provides enough real estate for a few people to prep meals. It is also equipped with Miele appliances, including an induction cooktop, a dishwasher, a microwave/convection oven, an Isotherm refrigerator/freezer, an Edgestar six-inch, seven-bottle wine cooler, a water-purification system and more.

Belowdecks are three staterooms outfitted with a custom European Samarra Sisal carpet with acoustic underlay, including the amidships owners’ stateroom, which also has a custom island berth, a 32-inch flat-screen TV and an en suite head. The forepeak VIP stateroom has a double berth, and an en suite head. The third guest stateroom is to starboard and abaft the VIP with twin berths, creating a solid setup for cruising families.

The Palm Beach 65’s exterior spaces provide two alfresco dining options. The first is found in the cockpit with aft bench seating, a fixed table and room to pull up loose chairs. There is also an L-shaped sofa forward and to starboard for additional seating. Stairs to port lead to the flybridge where there is an L-shaped sofa and table to starboard and abaft the three-seat helm station. There is also a grill in the after section of the flybridge.

Side decks lead to the foredeck where there is a two-person sun pad and cushioned bow-rider seating, offering a quiet getaway from noise at the quay or a place to take in a sunset with friends.

Independence has a Garmin electronics package on board that includes three 8617 multifunction displays, a GSD 25 fishfinder/sounder, autopilot, a GMR Fantom 4-foot Open Array, an Icom VHF, two engine room cameras, AIS 800, WiFi, a Volvo Penta 7-inch display and an aft-facing cockpit camera.

Some other notable features on board this Palm Beach 65 include a Fusion Marine Apollo Series stereo system, a dynamic positioning system, a Fischer Panda 19,000i generator, a crew quarters and a 10-foot Zodiac tender with an 8 hp electric outboard.

From the Yachting Archive: Once Upon a Time in Oz

“You don’t have to be Hercule Poirot to find evidence of the builder’s efforts. Simply stroke the glossy woodwork with your fingertips or sight along the surface of the dinette table. You won’t see or feel any flaws in the finish. Powerful magnifying glass in hand, examine each joint for the tiniest gap or unevenness between two surfaces. Zero. In keeping with Palm Beach’s take on traditional New England styling, Herreshoff cleats of stainless-steel sprout from the teak decks in all the right places. Custom stainless-steel chocks guide the mooring lines to their destinations. Gently run the tip of your finger over the welded joints of the safety rail. If you detect any evidence of the customary weld bead, you’ll get a prize — yet to be determined.” – Yachting, October 2011

Where is Independence located? The yacht is currently lying in Charleston, South Carolina.
