Used-Yacht Review: Sabre 42 Salon Express

The Sabre 42 Salon Express called Osprey is listed with Maritimo Americas and has a $498,000 asking price. The 2011 Downeast-style express cruiser has timeless lines and has a solid layout for cruising couples.

The Sabre 42 Salon Express rides on a modified V-hull form, which has a fine entry that transitions to 16 degrees of transom deadrise, creating a stable platform on the water. Power for this 40-footer is provided by twin Cummins QSB5.9 380 diesels, which combine with the Zeus azipod drive system, a combination Yachting previously described as “transforming a lovely New England-style boat into a surprisingly economical hot rod.” This 42 Salon Express has a reported cruise speed of 25 knots.

“The bottom is steep and fine forward, splitting waves into kindling and easing the way for the shallower after sections. Lifting strakes and chine flats add lift, and the latter enhance the boat’s stability when she’s at rest or at displacement speed,” Yachting previously reported. “Nothing special here, just sound design, so I wasn’t prepared for her handling prowess. The 42 accelerated briskly-not like a muscle boat, but quickly enough-and sprinted to a top speed of 34 knots. I turned sharply left and right, and then put the Express into a 360-degree turn at full throttle. The G-load surprised me, as the boat banked into the turn and carved a tight circle, losing only about 200 rpm. The boat simply digs in and hangs on in perfect control, even when I crossed our wake.”

Guests enter the cockpit via the transom door off Osprey‘s swim platform. An L-shaped settee wraps from the transom to port and is set around a fixed table. Two aft-facing bench seats are forward to port and starboard, flanking the salon door on centerline. Pull up some loose chairs and there’s alfresco dining for six. Side decks with high stainless-steel rails safely lead to the foredeck to get to the ground tackle.

Stepping into the salon, grain-matched cherrywood and a teak-and-holly sole catches the eye. Even the L-shaped sofa to port has a high-gloss wood folding table. A lounge chair to starboard abaft the two-seat helm station, which has uber-comfy Stidd chairs.

Belowdecks, guests will find the mid-level galley and Osprey ’s two staterooms. The portside galley is equipped with a two-burner cooktop, refrigerator and freezer drawers, a sink and a microwave. The forepeak master stateroom has a centerline berth and the starboard stateroom has a double berth. The single head is to port and forward of the galley.
