Normally when I write about sunglasses, the first thing I talk about is the polarized lenses. But here’s an anecdotal story about my Costa Del Mar Whitetip frames that has nothing to do with fishing, boating or anything on the water.
I have a pair of Whitetips with prescription 580 lenses housed in retro tortoise frames that I wear pretty much any time I’m outside, including my daughter’s lacrosse games. Recently, I took a hit from an errant lacrosse ball–a five-ounce sphere of vulcanized rubber that, if it hits you at high velocity, really hurts. Well, it hit me right between the eyes.

My Costa frames took the brunt of the impact before flying off my face. I can report that the hit fractured the bridge of my nose in two places but the lenses and frames came away completely unscathed. Not a scratch, crack or anything. So, I can vouch that, among other things, the Costa Whitetips are definitely impact resistant. I’ll feel much less worried the next time I’m on the water and accidentally drop them from a tuna tower.
