This is the second of a seven-part story on Boating editors’ favorite boat trailer accessories. We chose this one because it eases unloading by reducing the friction from carpeted bunks.

Traditional wooden bunk boards rot, split and splinter, risking damage to your boat. When it’s time to replace them, Ultimate Bunk Boards’ Supreme 2×6 polymer planks offer a maintenance-free, permanent alternative that eases loading and unloading thanks to the frictionless surface of the polymer planks. They don’t absorb water, won’t rot and don’t need carpet covering.

Supreme Bunk Boards are sold in pairs from 3- to 12- feet long and are designed with aluminum “planks” underneath to add stiffness for bracket spans of more than 3 feet. For boats on trailers that have bunk supports at greater than 36-inch intervals, Surpreme Bunkboards are reinforced with an extruded aluminum beam that increases stiffness on longer spans. They range from $134 a pair for 3-foot bunks to $619 per 12-foot pair.

Original Bunk Boards are ideal for spans of 36-inches or less and cost from $24 per 1-foot pair to $368 to 12-foot pairs. Unlike traditional wooden bunks that absorb water and eventually deteriorate, these polymer planks are completely waterproof and resist UV damage, eliminating the need for carpet replacement or wood treatment. Their slick surface facilitates easier boat launch and retrieval, reducing the power needed from your winch while minimizing hull abrasion.

Installation generally takes 1 to 3 hours depending on your trailer configuration and whether you’re replacing existing bunks or modifying mounting brackets. They can be mounted with lag bolts from underneath or stainless-steel hex head bolts and nuts using a drill to recess the bolt head. Hardware brackets are available if needed as well.

The polymer material also reduces wear on your hull’s finish. For boaters tired of replacing waterlogged wood or worn carpet, these bunk boards represent a one-time upgrade that pays dividends in reduced maintenance and improved performance. $24 to $619 per pair; ultimatebunkboards.com
