TEMO, the French company known for producing the world’s lightest outboard motor, debuted its new TEMO 1000 at the Newport International Boat Show in September. The follow-up to the award-winning TEMO 450 combines more power with the same compact, lightweight design—and maintains its US price point despite new tariffs.
“We feel we’ve priced the 1000 fairly for the power and innovative features it offers,” said TEMO co-founder and CEO Alexandre Seux. “The current environment involving changes in trade and tariff policy does not change our minds about this.”
The TEMO 450 became a favorite for dinghies and small craft after its 2018 launch, earning a Pittman Award in 2021 and an IBEX Award in 2023. The new TEMO 1000 offers significantly more thrust, designed as auxiliary propulsion for lightweight sailboats up to 26 feet. A retractable tiller handle stows away neatly on larger vessels but is instantly available for dinghy or raft use.
“The slimline transom bracket allows the height of the motor to be adjusted to exactly suit the height of the boat’s transom,” said TEMO co-founder and general manager Justine Perussel. “Long and short shaft versions are therefore no longer required.”
Early testers have praised the 1000’s performance. Bill Lynn, president of the Herreshoff Marine Museum and America’s Cup Hall of Fame, ran the TEMO 1000 on a J/70. “We were able to hit five knots—a bit quicker than with our 2.3 HP Honda and in a much tidier package,” he said. “It’s lighter and much easier to travel with than a gas engine and seems like a great way to be more friendly to our ocean environment.”
Dealers and builders are also seeing its potential. “The 1000 has more than double the power and is perfect for all-around use with the Storm 18 or anything similar,” said Bill Crane, partner at Storm Marine Group. Bridget O’Brian of North Atlantic Inflatables highlighted the motor’s versatility: “The adjustable shaft length means one motor will work on both a dinghy and larger transom sailboat. The super lightweight motor and battery makes it easier for anyone to use and move.”The TEMO 1000 weighs about 33 pounds including battery and features simplified construction with few parts, making it easy to maintain and support. Next, it will be featured at the J/70 Corinthian Worlds at Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead. For more information, visit temo-usa.com.
